Common Concerns

Neck Pain in Mandurah

A sore or stiff neck can affect much more than turning your head. Driving, working at a screen, sleeping, training, concentrating and even finding a comfortable position can suddenly become more difficult.

Neck pain is common and, in many cases, improves over time. The important first step is understanding your individual presentation, checking for anything that needs further investigation, and deciding what may be appropriate from there.

Neck Pain Is Common, but Every Experience Is Different

Neck pain can begin suddenly, build gradually or come and go over time. Some people notice stiffness or aching around the neck and shoulders. Others find certain movements uncomfortable, struggle to turn their head normally or notice symptoms after work, training, travel or a change in routine.

The intensity of pain does not always provide a simple measure of what is happening physically. Symptoms can also be influenced by activity, sleep, stress, workload, previous episodes and how sensitive the area has become.

A useful assessment therefore looks at the whole presentation rather than assuming that one joint, muscle, posture or structural finding automatically explains the problem.

What Can Neck Pain Feel Like?

People can experience neck pain in different ways. Common descriptions may include:

• aching or stiffness through the neck
• discomfort around the base of the skull
• difficulty comfortably turning the head
• pain around the neck, shoulders or upper back
• symptoms that are worse after prolonged desk work or driving

• discomfort following a change in training or physical workload
• stiffness when first waking or after being in one position
• symptoms that fluctuate from day to day
• headaches occurring alongside neck symptoms
• arm symptoms such as tingling, numbness or weakness in some presentations

Symptoms travelling into the arm, particularly when accompanied by numbness, tingling or weakness, may need additional neurological assessment. Headaches also have many possible causes and should not automatically be assumed to come from the neck.

Why Does Neck Pain Happen?

There is not always one identifiable structure or single “root cause” responsible for neck pain. Many presentations are described as non-specific because no serious disease or single structural problem completely explains the person’s symptoms.

Neck pain can occur around changes in activity, work demands, training, prolonged positions, injury or increased physical load. Sleep, stress, previous pain experiences and general recovery may also influence how manageable symptoms feel.

Sometimes there is a more specific presentation, such as irritation involving a nerve, an injury following trauma or another condition that requires medical investigation. Assessment helps distinguish between these possibilities.

At EiraForma, we do not assume that neck pain means something is “out”, misaligned or permanently damaged. The aim is to understand the individual clinical picture and make an appropriate plan from there.

Do You Need a Scan for Neck Pain?

Imaging is not automatically required for most people who present with uncomplicated neck pain.

X-rays, CT scans and MRI can be useful when there is a specific clinical reason to investigate further, such as significant trauma, neurological findings or another feature that may change management.

Scans can also identify structural changes that may not fully explain someone’s symptoms. Finding something on an image does not automatically mean that it is the reason a person’s neck hurts.

At EiraForma, imaging is not intended to be a routine requirement simply because someone has neck pain. Your history and assessment help determine whether further investigation may be appropriate.

The question is not simply whether we can take an image. It is whether the result is likely to meaningfully change what happens next.

What an Assessment May Involve

Before deciding whether treatment is appropriate, the first step is understanding the presentation.

Your Story

We begin with how the symptoms started, how they behave, previous episodes, relevant health history, your work and activity, and what the problem is making difficult.

Function and Assessment

Your chiropractor may assess relevant neck, shoulder or upper-body movement and function depending on your presentation. There is no requirement for every person to complete an identical series of tests.

Neurological Assessment Where Needed

If symptoms include arm pain, altered sensation, tingling, numbness, weakness or other neurological features, additional examination or referral may be appropriate.

Clear Next Steps

We explain what we have found, what remains uncertain and what options may be reasonable. If another practitioner, medical assessment or further investigation is more appropriate, that should form part of the plan.

What Care for Neck Pain May Involve

There is no single treatment that everyone with neck pain needs. Appropriate care depends on the presentation, your goals, preferences and what the assessment identifies.

Understanding What Is Happening

Clear explanations can reduce unnecessary worry and help make movement feel less intimidating. We want you to understand your options without leaving with the impression that your neck is fragile or structurally “wrong”.

Hands-On Care

Manual therapy may be considered for some people. Options can include mobilisation, manipulation or other hands-on techniques depending on the individual assessment and preferences. These techniques are not automatically required for every person or every appointment.

Movement and Exercise

Exercise may be considered depending on your presentation and goals. This might involve gradually restoring comfortable movement, building strength or improving tolerance for work, training or everyday tasks. There is no single exercise that everyone with neck pain needs.

Staying Active

For many uncomplicated neck pain presentations, maintaining normal activity and gently continuing to move the neck can be useful. How much activity is manageable will vary between people and may need to change temporarily.

Other Options

Depending on the presentation, care may also include education, activity modification, soft tissue techniques, dry needling or referral to another healthcare professional where appropriate.

Your Neck Does Not Need a Perfect Posture

When neck pain develops, posture often becomes the first thing people blame. It is easy to start monitoring every position and wondering whether sitting, sleeping or looking down has damaged something.

Position can certainly influence how comfortable you feel, particularly when you spend a long time in one position. That does not mean there is one perfect posture that everyone needs to maintain throughout the day.

For many people, changing position regularly, moving more often and progressively building tolerance to the positions their life requires can be more practical than trying to hold themselves perfectly all day.

A desk worker, tradie, driver, parent and gym-goer all place different demands on their neck. The useful question is how to make those demands more manageable for the individual.

Neck Pain Has to Fit Into Real Life

Desk Work and Screens

Long periods at a computer can become uncomfortable when the neck is sensitive. Changing position, adjusting the setup where useful, taking movement breaks and gradually improving tolerance may be more realistic than trying to maintain one rigid posture.

Driving

Neck movement matters when checking mirrors, reversing and safely observing traffic. If pain significantly restricts your ability to turn your head, consider whether you can drive safely and seek appropriate advice if you are unsure.

Trades and FIFO Work

Driving, machinery, overhead work, lifting, helmets, tools and long shifts can all place different demands on the neck and shoulders. A useful plan needs to account for the job you actually have to return to.

Gym, Sport and Everyday Activity

The aim is not automatically to stop activity. Depending on the presentation, it may be more useful to modify load temporarily and progressively rebuild the movements and activities that matter to you.

Where Chiropractic Care May Fit

People commonly consult chiropractors with musculoskeletal concerns such as neck pain. Whether chiropractic care is appropriate depends on the individual’s history, symptoms, assessment and preferences.

At EiraForma, neck pain does not automatically mean your neck needs to be manipulated. Chiropractic care can include advice, movement, exercise and different forms of hands-on care where appropriate.

Research suggests that manual therapy and exercise can be useful options for some people with non-specific neck pain, particularly as part of a broader approach. The choice of treatment should still be individual rather than based on a standard technique or predetermined schedule.

If your presentation suggests that another healthcare professional or further medical investigation is more appropriate, referral should be part of good care.

What You Can Expect From EiraForma

No Predetermined Plan

There is no automatic number of visits or standard treatment schedule simply because you have neck pain. Recommendations depend on your individual presentation and progress.

Clear Explanations

We aim to explain what we find without using fear-based language or suggesting that your neck is fragile, unstable or permanently damaged.

Respectful Consent

Any hands-on treatment is discussed with you first. You can ask questions, discuss alternatives, decline a technique or change your mind at any stage.

Review and Adapt

Your response and goals matter. Care can be modified, reduced, concluded or redirected when the situation changes or another approach becomes more appropriate.

Practical Things You Can Do When Your Neck Is Sore

General information cannot replace an individual assessment, but these principles can be useful for many uncomplicated neck pain presentations.

Keep moving where practical
Unless an injury or healthcare professional has given you a reason not to, gentle natural neck movement and maintaining normal activity where manageable can be preferable to becoming completely inactive.

Change position
If one position becomes uncomfortable, change it. You do not need to find one perfect posture and remain there all day.

Break up long screen sessions
Regular movement away from a desk or screen can provide variety and reduce the amount of time spent in one position.

Modify activity temporarily
If a movement significantly aggravates symptoms, reducing the load, range, duration or frequency for a period may allow you to stay active while symptoms settle.

Build back gradually
As things improve, progressively returning towards normal work, exercise and activity can help restore confidence and tolerance.

Pay attention to meaningful changes
New weakness, significant numbness, balance problems, severe unusual symptoms or symptoms following significant trauma deserve appropriate medical assessment.
